Lauren Mitchell worked with Devon as a vocational counsellor with Open Door Group, in order to support him finding employment. She helped Devon as a job coach when he started his new job at Thrifty Foods. Open Door Group works with people with disabilities as well as people with addictions or other barriers to employment in finding work. As Lauren said, “we believe everybody can work.” Lauren describes working with Devon, saying that he “was a star and did most of the work”, having come to her with an employer in mind. Lauren is a real advocate for workplaces where everyone belongs, and where “everyone who wants to work can work.”
In this meeting Devon tells us how he’s been preparing for the job search and who has been helping him.
Devon wants to work at a grocery store and will be applying at Thrifty Foods next week. Devon meets with Regina Nguyen, an employment specialist with Douglas College to go over the questions he’s been practicing for his interview and to talk more about his job search.
Regina explains her role and how she’ll be helping Devon. She also talks about Devon’s responsibilities in the job search, and what he can expect as he applies for his first job.
Eileen also talks about the success of Devon’s PWD application and the new streamlining for people who qualify for Community Living BC services. She also talks about Devon’s active social life.

In this video Devon talks about his involvement with with Theatrix, a youth theatre company, and his role in the recent stage production “Legally Blonde.” Devon worked backstage helping with stagecraft as well making numerous on-stage appearances.
We also hear about what Devon’s been up to with College and looking for a job.
Having just graduated from high school in June, Devon is excited about his future. He wants to go to College in September and learn how to drive a forklift so he can work in a warehouse. He also wants to get a part-time job at Thrifty’s, where he did work experience during high school. He hopes that they’ll see he was a good worker and hire him. Many students who need extra support go back to high school for an “overage year” after they graduate but Devon doesn’t plan on going back.
Devon has a passion for theatre and stagecraft. He worked on set design during high school and wants to continue being involved in stagecraft after he graduates. He thinks the school may still need his help.
Devon’s mom Eileen just recently filled out the forms required for Devon to receive his PWD (persons with disability) benefits. Eileen has received support from SHARE services and the Simon Fraser Society for Community Living to get through the process. She’s also spoken with people at Community Living BC about what kind of supports Devon can receive when he turns 19.
