In this video we see Kayla visit Simon Fraser University to meet with an inclusion facilitator with STEPS Forward BC Initiative for Inclusive Post-Secondary Education. Kayla is currently applying to attend SFU with the help of STEPS Forward in the fall; whether or not she is able to attend will depend in large part on the funding she receives from Community Living BC (CLBC) and the number of other students who have applied to the initiative, as there is a limited number of spaces available.
STEPS Forward is a unique non-profit, family-driven organization that provides support to students with developmental disabilities to study at their local college or university. The initiative currently supports students in Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna, Vernon and Merritt.
“We see that young adults with developmental disabilities, who have learned, laughed and worked with their non-disabled peers at college and university, are well on their way to inclusive lives” (www.steps-forward.org)
Kayla has been working with Ross Renaud, supervisor of Community Living with Share Family and Community Services Society, whom we see in this video. Ross is helping Kayla continue her bus training and get familiar with other activities within the community that may prepare her for life after high school. Before the interview Kayla and Ross did a quick tour of SFU. Funding for this assistance is provided through the Ministry of Children and Family Development. We heard this support mentioned in a previous video when Kayla’s mom Teresa met with her in-own-home consultant about future plans for Kayla.
In this video Kayla and Teresa rush off to catch the bus to go to work experience. Kayla now takes the bus on her own, after practicing many times with support. Kayla is attending Douglas College as part of her “grade 12 plus” year; her work experience is at another daycare, building up towards her goal to become a teacher.

In this video Kayla’s mom, Theresa, is meeting with Angela, an “in-own-home” consultant who works for the Simon Fraser Society for Community Living, in their Supported Child Development program.*
Angela helps families by providing the support and education that they need; the family determines what the support looks like. This worker is funded through the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) under their Family Services mandate.
In this video Angela is putting together a 6-month-plan to help keep Theresa and Kayla on track. She is advising Theresa to make contact again with the MCFD social worker.
Angela suggests that Theresa may want the MCFD social worker to arrange for a life skills worker to help Kayla after school to develop skills such as bus training.** Theresa is thinking that the worker could help with the ongoing bus training to Douglas College which will support the teaching that the volunteer from Stenberg College provided.
*The Simon Fraser Society for Community Living is a non profit community agency. This support does not come from the school system and many teachers will not know nor should be expected to know that this level of help exists. Parents often need to reach out and seek this support. You can do this by approaching your local Supported Child Development program or by contacting your local MCFD office.
**Life skills workers are sometimes difficult to arrange and there are is often a wait time. The parents and youth are responsible for letting the social worker know what specific help is needed.
Olivia, Devon, Kayla and Kit graduated from high school in June of this year. We look forward to seeing what the future has in store for these four talented graduates. Congratulations!
Kayla plans on attending the Douglas College Transitions Program after high school. The program is “designed to assist students in making successful exits from secondary school into training or workplace settings.”
One of the admission requirements into this program is to be able to take public transit independently. To meet this requirement, Kayla recently practiced taking the bus with Harveen, a Stenberg College student who is studying to be a Special Education Assistant (SEA). Harveen volunteers with Kayla as part of her studies.
Many post secondary schools across BC also provide employment and transition programs for students with disabilities. The BCACL website maintains a list here (updated in 2010).
STEPS Forward Inclusive Post Secondary Society is another option for students who want to attend post secondary education. STEPS Forward is a “family-driven organization founded to ensure that people with developmental disabilities are included as students in the academic and social life of colleges and universities of British Columbia.”
