  • Devon – Excited for the Future

Devon is a talented artist who is about to finish his last year at Charles Best high school. Devon is ready to take the next step after graduation. He wants to move out on his own and get a job. Devon’s mom knows he can do it and sees him working and living on his own, perhaps in a dorm room.

Devon has gained some work experience at Safeway and at a local greenhouse. He did well and enjoyed both jobs. He’s learned to take the bus and make transfers to get to work and get around town. Devon is also involved in the drama department at school, using his artistic skills to help with stagecraft.

Both Devon and his mom are confident that he will take the next steps towards independence. “He has to do it eventually,” Devon’s mom says. “He’s old enough. It’s hard though, you gotta let them grow up. He can do it. I know he can do it. “

Hey Devon…thanks for sharing your story so far. I wonder how things are going now? I can see you have many talents and are very creative. Your confidence and your Mom’s confidence in you are awesome. I work with some students in North Vancouver who are really going to enjoy viewing and reading all about you.

Hi Jill. I go to Douglas College now. I am doing the Warehouse Training program. I learn about safety and jobs to do in the warehouse. I will get to learn to drive a forklift and do work in a real warehouse soon.

Hi!! I’m Devon’s mom …I’d like to share that Devon is also helping out at the food bank every week and has joined a youth leadership council. He is also on a cheer team for the second year. He is very social and having the opportunity to attend Douglas College has been a great experience.

            Hello, Devon.
It is a pleasure to get to know you a little through the video. Thank you for sharing on this website things about your life. I hope you the program at Douglas College is going to be fun and practical. I can already imagine you driving one of those forklifts.
I have a few questions for you. I’ll be looking forward to your reply.
            1. Besides operating the forklift, what other things do you think you do you do in the warehouse? I never worked in a warehouse, but I imagine that there will be communicating with truck drivers somehow, taking inventories, cleaning, etc. Am I right? Is there anything other than those?

            2. What do you enjoy about working in Safeway? Do you find anything common in between working at Safeway and working at a warehouse? Your mother has mentioned about your work ethics. What are they?

            3. What do you want to do with your wonderful art skill in the future?

From the impressions I got in the video, you seem to be a friendly and outgoing person. This trait seems to be one of the most important things we need to be a part of the community, so I am happy for you. I am looking forward to the updates.
            Wishing all the best,
            Sarah

Devon- You seem to have some great goals in place for yourself that’s great! I’m still trying to find my way in this crazy thing we call life, keep up the positive attitude!

Devon’s Mom- a quick question for you. I’m wondering if Devon’s high school brought to your attention the importance of starting to plan for Devon’s future and transition into employment? If so what grade did they start discussing this with you? If they didn’t discuss this with you had you wished they had? How did you find the all resources to see what you needed to do to do plan for the future, was it (or is it) overwhelming?

Hi Jessica, I'm Devon's mom ...High School teachers were very helpful with planning for Devon's future through IEP goals, work experience and life skills. His teachers all wanted him to succeed and help us plan his future. His teachers feel like family. They created a path, I trusted the path and so far Devon's has been happy and involved with the community and is going to college.

In grade 9, he did both homeschooling and electives at the high school then re-entered public school in grade 10 because there was now many opportunities for work experience and life skills

In the IEP meetings, it was always clear where they would like to see Devon progress to and how to get him there. They had specialized skill development classes and he has enjoyed all of the work experience opportunities,

It has been very overwhelming, still is sometimes, there is still alot of opportunities for Devon and we are still planning for the future.

                Hi Devon.

It was a pleasure listening to your future ambitions through your mom! I myself love art, and strongly looked into Emily Carr for pursuing my desire to create sculptures and draw! could you see yourself pursuing a future in art and design? wouldn’t it be amazing to create short films from the drawing you created?

I also think it is inspiring to hear you do not want to do another year of High school, you are ambitions and strong spoken, two major benefits! I can’t wait for another update!

                All the best,
                Chelsey Gee

                  Hi Devon
You sure have a talent with art. Those were beautiful pieces that you made. You also mentioned that you love the theatre and did some work with stagecraft at school. Have you heard of Theatre Terrific? They are a production company that brings people of all abilities together. I have seen one of their productions and they are pretty good.
You mom mentions that you are a hard worker. That is great because your employers will all appreciate that and that is a good asset to have on a resume.
                  Thank you for sharing
                  Kelli
