The School Act in British Columbia allows for the extension of a sixth year to students who have graduated. If a student turns 19 on July 1st or later, they are eligible to enrol in school the following September. By all accounts this is unusual as most students happily leave school after completing 5 years of secondary. The education system on the whole is reluctant to hold students back a year and if anything is often criticized for moving students through too quickly.
However many students graduating with a School Leaving Certificate (Evergreen) take this opportunity to stay in school. There is no dark intention here. Many students and families will report that they would be lost without that extra year.
Students with disabilities will not receive CLBC funding until they reach the age of 19. For many students who graduate earlier at the age of 17 and 18 this may leave them without a funded support path for at least a year.
This year has remained an educational anomaly since its first offering. Is it school or is it community training? If nothing else it offers a perfect opportunity for ministries to integrate planning and funding. (It must be noted that schools boards will continue to receive funding for the student at the same level as they have in all previous educational years)It is our hope to explore districts that are attempting to remake this final year into something powerful for students and families.
