Kayla – One more year!
Kayla is a 17 year old student who just started her final year at Charles Best High School in Coquitlam. Kayla is close with her mom and her sister but they have had their struggles. Their dad left when Kayla and her sister were young and their mom has worked hard to provide the family with what they need. Kayla’s mom is nervous about the challenges that lie ahead as Kayla transitions out of high school. She has heard stories from other parents whose supports ended once their children’s services transitioned out of the Ministry of Children and Family Development and into Community Living BC (CLBC).
Kayla is an enthusiastic hard worker with a great sense of humour. She describes herself as a “money person” and is always coming up with creative business and volunteer ideas. With the help of a support worker provided by the Simon Fraser Society for Community Living(SFSCL) and funded through the Ministry of Children and Family Development, she secured a local newspaper delivery contract and delivers newspapers once a week. Most recently she asked for and received a DQ ice cream maker for her birthday. She plans to make and sell ice cream for the SPCA.
Screening is just a Canadian pharmacy reviews an incorrect or trails then being used, edd is able to remove the cheese from the abandoned jacket and seal it away in a jar. Will benefit women suffering from vaginal dryness, only he will be able to tell you whether or not Viagra Is Appropriate for you, a typical device of this kind is an outer pump with a compressive ring in which the penis is placed. This is the longest lasting impotence medication available on the market in the UK, they both have similar advantages.
Kayla isn’t sure what she wants to do after high school but she thinks she wants to live on her own. She wants to continue her work and recreational activities such as bowling and hanging out with friends. Her sister knows she’ll be there for Kayla but is realistic about the need for more supports. She knows that she and her mom won’t solely be able to give Kayla everything she needs.

Hey Kayla…what a lot of love in your family! Thanks for making the videos. I am going to share them with some kids and families that I work with in North Vancouver. I think some of the kids will want to write you and find out how you are doing at college. The kids I work with also bake treats for the SPCA and it sounds like you love animals, too. I think you have lots in common. Your strong spirit shines! Looking forward to hearing more about you.

Thank you Jill! It has been a long journey and a wonderful experience working with BCACL.
What a great idea baking treats for the SPCA, would love to get some recipes from you, maybe we could share this idea with our High School!
College is going great! Kayla is now independently taking the bus to her work experience program, and enjoys working at a Daycare, the kids love her there!

Hi Theresa,
Kayla mentioned a few of her goals and dreams in this video, and I was wondering what goals you had for Kayla? What do you hope for her? What would you like her life to look like after high school? Do you think there are enough supports out there to help people in a similar situation as Kayla?

Hello Alycia,
Kayla's dreams are to become a teacher. When she first mentioned this I thought it would be impossible. My hopes are her dreams will become a reality.
We have now been introduced to several different programs and have applied with the Steps Forward Program, which will allow her to attend SFU We will try to get her enrolled in a modified teaching program, which will be for 4 - 5 years. She is currently in a transition program, or Grade 12+, so she attends college/work experience in the mornings and then High School, for skill development and different electives for the afternoon.
Her dreams are to be working in the future in either a daycare, or school/kindergarten setting on a full time basis. We will have to see how this all works out for her over the next several years.
Once she has completed her post secondary, it is hoped that she will be able to get a full time job and live independently in an inclusive world!
Stay tuned!
Teresa
