  • Olivia – Work experience at the Cafe

    January 18, 2013

In this video we see Olivia completing her work experience at Creekside Cafe as part of the Douglas College Transition program, which she is attending for her “plus year” of high school. For more information on “plus years” and the unique partnership between the Coquitlam School District and Douglas College, watch this video with educator Chris Horrocks.

In Coquitlam, students who choose to complete a “plus year” can attend the transition program at Douglas College where they are enrolled for 12 weeks in a career training program and placed in work practicums. The goal of the program is to give students the skills they need to transition into paid employment. Many other schools and districts have different models of “plus years” and some others do not offer the option at all.

We also talk to Olivia’s parents, Paul and Elena, about what they’ve learned and experienced with other job placements.
